The Register of Deeds is the manager and custodian of a large number of public records. Records archived in our office include real estate transactions, vital records (Jackson County births and deaths) and marriage licenses issued in Jackson County. We proudly serve our military by recording their DD214 military discharge forms and issuing certified copies to them free of charge.
It is the mission of Jackson County Register of Deeds to record, preserve and provide access to the real estate and vital records in an efficient manner, according to NC General Statutes. The care, maintenance and access to these records are governed by law. Our staff is committed to providing courteous, efficient and professional service to our customers.

NOTE: This office does not prepare any documents; we are record keepers only. We do not provide any forms. We do not change any information on any document. All recordings must meet requirements as stated below.
Documents recorded on or after July 1, 2002 must meet GS 161-14(b) as follows:
Filing a non-standard document that does not meet the above requirements will be subject to a $25.00 non-standard fee in addition to regular recording fees for any instrument presented for registration.
State excise tax (revenue) is required to be paid on deed transactions conveying an interest. This tax is calculated at $2 per $1000 of the sales price.
Effective March 7, 2011: All deeds must be presented to the Tax Collector’s Office for certification of no delinquent property taxes. The collector’s office requests Parcel Identification Numbers (PIN) for timely processing.

Deeds presented to land records for approval must contain the following:

Deeds involving property splits must either refer to a recorded survey showing the split, or have signature of approval from the Jackson County Planning Department.
Plats, or surveys, are recorded in the Register of Deeds office. Plat sizes can be 18” by 24” or 24” by 36”. After proper approvals from the Jackson County Planning Department (phone: 828-631-2261) and the Jackson County Land Records (phone: 828-586-7539), a Mylar copy and one paper copy is filed in the Register of Deeds Office. The cost to record a plat is $21.00. Copies of survey plats can be obtained for $2.00 in our office. All plats that are on record in our office are now on-line, and can be viewed and copied from outside the office at no charge. There is no charge for Satisfactions of Mortgages and Deeds of Trust.

Fees for certified copies are $10.00 each and uncertified copies are $1.00 each. You pay by major credit/debit cards online. (Additional fee is charged if paying by credit card).

You may also come by our office. You do not need an appointment. Or, you may submit a written request by printing and filling out the form below. When mailing in applications, you will need to attach a copy of photo ID and include a contact phone number.
Our office files all birth/death records of only those persons born/deceased in Jackson County, North Carolina. Our birth/death records date back to 1913; however we do have some Delayed Birth records dated back to the mid 1800’s.

The law also allows anyone seeking information for legal determination of personal or property right or someone authorized as a agent, attorney, or legal representative of the person whom the certificate is being requested.
Certified copies are $10.00 each. Acceptable methods of payment: cash, credit/debit cards, money order, certified check. We do not accept personal checks.

Deed of Trust $64.00 for the first 35 pages
$4.00 for each additional page
All other documents$26.00 for the first 15 pages
$4.00 for each additional page
(Other documents include: deeds, easements, modifications, assignments, affidavits, releases, power of attorneys, etc.) (Satisfactions: no charge!)
UCC & Plat recording fees will remain the same.
